IES CORE BUSINESS AREAS
Institute of Ethiopian standards has the following core business areas which mainly focus on the standards formulation, training and Technical support, certification schemes and National standards mark administration and organizing and disseminating information on standards, Conformity assessment procedures and Technical regulation for the customers.
1. Development of Ethiopian Standards
Since the establishment of the organization, about 12,000 Ethiopian standards were formulated in different fields, of which agriculture, food and chemical technology, electromechanical, construction and civil engineering, textile and leather technology, health and safety and others.
2. Training and Technical support
By assessing the needs of the producers, service renders and consumers, the agency gives advice, training and technical support in different fields to solve problems related to implementation of standards. The Institute gives training, technical support and consultancy services on the following fields; quality management systems, environmental protection and food safety, standard formulations project works, statistical process control, on the job safety management systems, internal quality audit and others.
3. Certification schemes and National Standard marks Administration
As a National certification scheme and Standards mark owner IES strives to ensure the quality, safety and consistency of the products produced, distributed and sold in Ethiopia, to protect the health and safety of the consumer, and to ensure a fair trade system, the institute develop and publicly avail certification schemes, determine the shape and content of the national standard marks, and authorize the use of these marks. IES strive to enable manufacturers to be competitive in the domestic and international markets.
4. Information technology and documentation services
More than 200,000 standards and other normative documents of national, regional and international standards are available at IES’s library. The Institute organizes and disseminates the Ethiopian standards and standards related information in different ways for its interested parties.
